The holidays have officially come to an end, and it is now time to get back to working on getting the ideal weight you wanted. Doing a lot of cardio is one common way to help, but it is not the only way to lose weight. How you eat is also important in helping to lose weight. Most times, people workout everyday but do not eat right. This is usually the case because the information of what to eat is not always easy to find. We are always told to eat vegetables and drink water, but there is more to it than just that. So to help with the lack of knowledge, I will make a list of what should and should not be eaten to help lose weight. What foods to avoid Before we know what foods are good for weight loss, it is important to know what foods are bad for weight loss. Although this information is very common, it is always good to have a reminder of what to avoid. Candy, energy, protein, and granola bars should be avoided due to the amounts of sugar they contain. Sugary beverages and dried fruit should be avoided for the same reason. Chips, crackers, and pretzels should be avoided due to the high amount of calories they contain per one serving. Fruit juice, ice cream, and sweets should be avoided for both high amounts of sugar and calories. Avoid fast food because they are also high in calories and contain high amounts of fat. Also, try not to consume too many carbohydrates. Extra carbs are stored as fat, which is not what you want if you are trying to lose weight. Now that we know what foods to avoid, let’s talk about what foods to eat. What foods to consume Let’s start off with protein. Protein is commonly known to help build muscle, but it is also helpful when trying to lose weight. Proteins take longer to digest which causes you to feel fuller longer. Because it takes more to break down proteins in the body, it causes you to burn calories during the digestion. Some good sources of protein are tofu, tempeh, beans, and nuts. Although carbohydrates can be a problem when trying to lose weight, that does not mean it should be completely removed from our diets. Some carbohydrates, like whole grains, can be helpful when trying to lose weight. Some good sources of whole grains are whole wheat foods, whole oats, buckwheat, quinoa, spelt, whole barley, and brown rice. Fruits and vegetables are also helpful because they are healthier to consume for energy. They also have a good source of fiber which causes you to stay fuller longer; similar to protein.
