I've been wearing nail polish since I was 5 years old. Over the years I've tried a few brands. I didn't stray too far from the brands I knew. I didn't want chemicals or animal byproducts in my nail polish.
Perhaps you don't know what makes nail polish not vegan. Well, I didn't know either. I only knew I didn't want it on my nails. So I decided to research it. Non-vegan nail polish contains gelatin, milk, lanolin, honey, beeswax, royal jelly, and carmine. However just because it's vegan doesn't mean it's cruelty-free.
While researching for this I found out about the toxins in the normal nail polish and realize that a lot of these nail polish brands are very harmful to us when we use them. So I've put together chemical free, cruelty free, and vegan nail polish into a list.
Before we go into the brands let's talk about the 7 major toxins in nail polish and the affects it can cause.
Toluene-This is a liquid which is very harmful to your nervous system. It can cause nausea and can cause you be light-headed. Toluene can also cause birth defect.
Formaldehyde-Is used to preserve dead humans and animals. It's vapors can trigger asthma.
Dibutyl Phthalae (DBP)- Is used to make plastic and is linked to cancer. It can also cause birth defects.
Camphor- A poison that can cause seizures and disorientation, if used in large doses. It can act as a shield for your nails, depriving them of nutrients and causes yellow stains.
Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP)- Is used in plastic and is flame retardent. It can affect your hormones, your reproductive health, and slows your metabolism.
Xylene- It irritates your skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. It can also cause problems in your organs by ingestion or inhalation.
Formaldehyde Resin- Is used in production of coatings and adhesive. It is less toxic than Formaldehyde but can be an allergen.
Here's a few labels that you should look for on polish bottles to make sure you're buying chemical-free polishes:
3-free means it's free of the worst trio of chemicals.
5-free means free of the worst trio plus two of the seven.
7-free means free of the worst 7 toxins.
The first brand I've used. It was founded in 1986 by the couple Zoya and Michael Reyzis. Zoya wanted healthy and natural ingredients in her spa for her clients. Micahael Reyzis, a chemist, created the formula for their brand. Their products are cruelty-free, 5-free and vegan.
Their nail polishes are vegan, cruelty-free and is 4-free.They are a natural brand.
Founded in San Francisco in 2011, it was formed by Aretha Sack and Janine Lee.The bright exciting colors make it stand out from the others on this list. This product is vegan, cruelty-free, and is 7-free.
Using toxic nail polish can have toxins seep into your blood stream and pores. So please consider buying chemical free products. Thanks for reading!
